As I’m writing, and as March closes out, yesterday was Opening Day for Major League Baseball, and the Oldways home team, the Boston Red Sox, started out the year with a win over the Seattle Mariners. This was a good start for a team that’s been in the basement for a few years.
Perhaps you’re wondering why you’re reading about the Boston Red Sox in a travel blog. It’s because I take the Red Sox wherever Oldways travels.
One of the many reasons people love to travel is the chance to meet new people and learn about their lives and their cultures, and to experience a place and culture as a local. Wonderfully, this authenticity is an essential part of the travel that I do as I plan and organize week-long Oldways culinary journeys.
Each and every person that I meet has something important to add to the experience. No matter the location, their knowledge and expertise are things I treasure. In valuing the knowledge of individuals and businesses, their authenticity and excitement become more special and evident as they talk with the people who travel with Oldways. “Pinch-me” moments, to be sure!
Honoring their craft – whether it is winemaking, olive oil production, cheesemaking, farming, tour guiding, hospitality, cooking or art – is an important element of Oldways travel. Support of their businesses and communities is equally significant.
At Oldways, to recognize this we have added a bit of fun over the years. At each farm, cheese producer, restaurant, winery, olive oil mill (among other places) we visit, we honor our hosts with questions and many thanks, plus a certificate and a touch of Boston – a Boston Red Sox hat.
The hat is universally loved. These are a few of the people we have had the privilege of learning from and getting to know, and we can’t wait for many more.
Go Sox!
